Autumn term 2024, week 8

Dear Families,

As we approach our Remembrance Service on Monday, our school community takes a moment to pause, reflect, and honour the sacrifices made by servicemen and women who have fought for their country. Next week we will be helping the children understand the significance of this day and holding a special service with a minute’s silence for all of the School Community.

Understanding Remembrance Sunday

Remembrance Sunday is observed every year on the second Sunday of November. Across the UK, this is a time to remember those who have served in the Armed Forces and to honour their bravery and commitment. In schools and communities like ours, people gather to lay wreaths, participate in moments of silence, and show appreciation for the sacrifices that were made to protect our country and way of life.

Remembrance in Exmouth

Exmouth has a rich history linked to both World Wars and is home to many families who have served or currently serve in the Armed Forces, particularly Royal Marines Commandos. This Sunday, a Remembrance parade will wind through the town, leading to the War Memorial at The Strand for a service and two-minute silence. Emily and Sam, our Heads of School, are laying a wreath in Lympstone on Sunday on behalf of St Peter’s. Many local organisations, including, military groups, and veterans, come together to remember and honour those who gave their lives in service. For our families, it’s an opportunity to connect with the broader Exmouth community and to see first-hand how we respect and remember our heroes.  Separate services will be held at Lympstone, Topsham and other local villages.

How You Can Participate

We encourage families to attend their local Remembrance Sunday service this weekend if possible. The ceremony is a powerful reminder of our shared history and a meaningful experience for children. If you can’t attend, perhaps take a moment to talk with your child about Remembrance and what peace means to your family.

Enjoy the weekend.
