Spring Term 2022 Week 1

Happy New Year and a very warm welcome back to St Peter’s and the Spring term 2022. This week, we welcomed the children back with an assembly focusing on New Year’s Resolutions.  Last year, our whole school resolution was the word ‘YET’.  ‘I can’t do it…. I can’t do it… YET!!’. We explored the possibility of success following hard work and dedication. “I can’t ride a bike, I can’t ride a bike…YET!”

This year I shared with the children our New Year’s Resolution for 2022.  ‘Make your Bed!’

I asked the children WHY if they wanted to change the world, they needed to start by ‘making their bed’.   The children really got the idea: starting off with the little things, helping out your parents, ‘tidy bed, tidy mind’ being some of the ideas thrown out.  Together we looked at the incredible speech from US Navy Admiral, William H. McRaven, a four star admiral who served as the 9th Commander of the US Special Operations Command. He is also a former First Director of NATO Special forces and in charge of training the elite Navy Seals. His speech told of the importance of doing the little things like making your bed, embracing fear and actively trying to change the world…

  • If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed.
  • If you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride, and will encourage you to do another task, and another, and another.
  • By the end of the day, that one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed.
  • Making your bed will also reinforce the fact that the little things in life matter. If you can’t do the little things right, you’ll never be able to do the big things right.
  • If, by chance, you have a miserable day, you will come home to a bed that is made. That you made. And a made bed will give you encouragement that tomorrow will be better.

Please encourage your children to make their beds in the morning and talk to them about my assembly.

Upper School watched the YouTube clip of the speech being made which is really fantastic (but a bit scary for younger viewers!)

I’m looking forward to seeing many Pre-prep parents next week for the postponed Nativities.  The stage is going up and the lights are all ready…
