Years 7 and 8 at St Peter’s are a very special time in the school, where children can take on leadership opportunities and more demanding sporting, academic and artistic programmes, while giving them space to enjoy their childhood within the supportive and caring atmosphere of a prep school.
Based in 28 acres overlooking the Exe Estuary, provision exists for the accommodation of up to 17 boarders (aged 7 – 13) under the care of qualified and experienced staff in the caring, family environment of Rhys Jones House. Class sizes are small enabling teachers to focus on the individual child to ensure they fulfil their potential academically, on the sports field, or musically and in the performing arts.
What are 11+ Scholarships?
Scholarships recognise outstanding academic, music, art & design, performing arts and sporting ability and potential. They are awarded to pupils in Year 6 (under 11 at the 1st September) for entry into Year 7.
If your child is awarded a St Peter’s scholarship for their time in Years 7 and 8, then we believe that they have the potential to achieve a similar award as entry to their next senior school. We will use their time in Years 7 and 8 to prepare them fully for a scholarship in Year 9 and will endeavour to do our best to help them to achieve this goal.
Scholarships are awarded for the whole of the child’s time at St Peter’s subject to suitable progress. As well as the prestige attached to winning an award, scholars have the opportunity to participate in a wide programme of activities designed to ensure they are supported and encouraged to continue to achieve their full potential.
Scholarships also carry a fee discount. Typically fee discounts of up to 30% will be awarded to major scholarships and 10% to minor scholarships although, in exceptional circumstances and for exceptional ability, higher awards may be offered at the Head’s discretion.
Means-tested bursaries are also available for pupils whose parents would not be able to afford school fees even with a scholarship fee discount. Please let us know as soon as possible if you would like to apply for a bursary and an application form and further information can be provided.
Pupils in receipt of other fee concessions (e.g. sibling discount) or who apply for and attain more than one scholarship only receive the higher of the discounts, they do not aggregate.
Scholarships are offered each year following assessment in the January of Year 6. Scholarships are awarded in:

Candidates may apply for a maximum of two disciplines (excluding academic). Awards may be made in more than one area (at the discretion of the Head) and subject to timetable commitments, although the total fee remission will be limited.
Expectations of a Scholar
All scholars will be expected to participate enthusiastically in the life of the school and set a good example to other pupils. They will be expected to contribute outstandingly in their scholarship discipline.
All awards will be monitored for appropriate performance and effort. Scholars who do not meet our expectations may have their Award terminated or decreased. We hope that parents will support and encourage the pupil to work hard and achieve their potential in their chosen areas.
All scholars, regardless of their scholarship discipline, will be expected to maintain high academic standards. Scholars in disciplines other than academic will be required to meet the School’s usual entrance requirements which will involve attending a taster day prior to the scholarship day. During the taster day, baseline assessments will be made in English, Maths and Science.
Application process for external candidates
A candidate must be registered with St Peter’s Prep School in order to submit a scholarship application. A registration form and a fee of £100 should be submitted to the Director of Admissions & Marketing. An appropriate application must be made before the closing dates.
Once we have received your application, we will invite you for an examination assessment or interview and inform you of the time, place and duration of these. We will also contact the Head of the applicant’s current school to ask them to complete a transfer form. When all assessments and examinations have been completed, the Head and relevant staff meet to discuss all applications and assessment outcomes.
Awards are made based upon performance in the examination/assessment and supporting documentation submitted. We aim to notify all applicants of the outcome the week following the assessments.

Academic Scholarship
Academic scholars are extended in their lessons and set a more challenging curriculum to prepare them for the demands of school life beyond St Peter’s. We expect our scholars to demonstrate a consistently high standard in class work, in prep and in examinations. In addition, we expect scholars to display curiosity and undertake independent study to broaden both their subject and general knowledge.
Academic Scholarships are open to applicants from within or outside the School, either as day or boarding pupils, and are awarded on academic merit and potential.
The assessments for academic awards for internal pupils consist of papers in English, Mathematics and Science. Pupils joining from primary schools will not be required to sit a Science paper. Applicants will also have an interview with the Head.
Sports Scholarship
Sports scholarships are awarded to pupils who show leadership, excellence and a positive attitude in more than one sport, including a team sport. They should be committed at all times and have a high level of personal fitness. Whilst they should regularly attend outside clubs, their priority should be their commitment to school teams and fixtures.
Part of the assessment will include a short interview where the candidate will be asked to demonstrate keenness and interest. He or she should submit with their application any appropriate records of success and/or references from school, club or county coaches, if applicable.
Sport Scholarships are open to applicants from within or outside the School, either as day or boarding pupils, and are awarded on merit and potential.

Music and Performing Arts Scholarships
Music and / or Drama scholarships are awarded to highly promising and enthusiastic pupils who contribute to the life of the school through singing, playing the piano or an orchestral instrument and / or outstanding participation in school productions.
In addition to their commitments at school, scholars are expected to practise at home on a regular basis, and this requires significant support and input from their parents. In addition to practical skills, pupils should work independently to gain a good understanding of musical genres and styles (music scholars) and role play, improvisation and play scripts (drama scholars). Many scholars are involved with music ensembles or drama troupes outside of school.
Music and Performing Art Scholarships are open to applicants from within or outside the School, either as day or boarding pupils, and are awarded on merit and potential.
Music Scholarship
As a rough guide, music candidates should be at approximately Grade 3 standard in their first instrument and Grade 1 in any second instrument. They will be asked to play one piece on their first instrument and one piece on their second and be prepared to sing a favourite song.
Candidates should also be prepared for:
● Scales and arpeggios – of their current standard
● Sight reading test – of their current standard
● Aural tests
The audition is followed by an interview.
Performing Arts Scholarship
Performing Arts candidates should perform 2 from the 3 following disciplines:
● Music: to sing their favourite song. Additionally, pupils are invited to play an instrumental piece.
● Drama: Perform a monologue, to last no longer than 2 minutes from any published play. Candidates will also be asked to perform an improvised piece.
The audition will be followed by an interview with the Head of Performing Arts.
Art & Design Scholarship
Art scholars should be creative and passionate about the subject. Scholars will be required to put in a lot of work in their own time. They will be expected to show a strong commitment to the subject and to improving their artistic ability. They will be expected to maintain high standards in both attainment and effort and they will be given the opportunity to work on projects outside of the normal curriculum. In particular, they will begin work on the Trinity Guildhall Arts Award programme where it is anticipated they will achieve their Bronze Award by the end of Year 8.
A portfolio will be required to show evidence of a high level of personal creativity, an interest and passion for art and design and be able to demonstrate a range of media that they have explored. In addition, candidates would be expected to present work journals and sketchbooks.
All work presented should be recent and no more than two years old.
There will be a practical task and a short interview with the Head of Art/DT, where we would discuss the portfolio and candidates should be prepared to present and discuss an artist or designer that inspires their own work.
Art and Design Scholarships are open to applicants from within or outside the School, either as day or boarding pupils, and are awarded on merit and potential.
All Rounder
These scholarships are awarded to candidates who are high academic achievers and achieve scholarship standard in two of the following subjects:
Art, Drama, Music or Sport.
They should be a genuine ‘all-rounder’ with real evidence of potential leadership.
All Rounder Scholarships are open to applicants from within or outside the School, either as day or boarding pupils, and are awarded on merit and potential.
Conditions of the Awards
All Awards are made at the Head’s discretion and are valid for the whole of the pupil’s school career, subject to the following conditions:
Academic: the awards are valid for the whole of the pupil’s time at St. Peter’s, assuming the pupil’s good behaviour, and wider contribution to academic studies.
Music and Performing Arts : music and drama scholars are required to enter fully into the musical and performing arts life of the school, joining choirs and ensembles. The award itself does not guarantee a role in productions.
Sport: award holders will contribute wholeheartedly to the sporting life of the school through participation in representative sports, although the award itself will not guarantee the holder a place in a team.
It is the school policy that scholarships and family discounts do not aggregate. Only the largest will apply at any one time. Any scholar who does not meet our expectations may have the Award decreased or terminated.
