Summer term 2026, week 5

Half-term has arrived at just the right moment and, with the forecast looking lovely, it is a good opportunity to enjoy everything we are lucky to have on our doorstep here in Devon: the coast, beaches, rivers and countryside.

One of the things I enjoy hearing about most is the wide range of interests our pupils develop outside school. Recently, some have taken up fishing, others golf, while many are spending lots of time out on their bikes. Year 5 completed their Bikeability qualification this half-term and it was fantastic to see them confidently riding on the roads. We are very fortunate to have such brilliant cycling routes locally, including the Exe Estuary Trail, Woodbury Common and Haldon Forest.

Cycling is such a wonderful activity for children, not only for fitness and fun, but also for building confidence, resilience and independence. There is something very special about children gradually learning to manage their own adventures, whether that is cycling to the shop for an ice cream, heading off on family rides, or simply spending hours outdoors with friends exploring safely on two wheels. I know biking is a big part of life for many of our St Peter’s children.

Half-term is a great chance to try something new: get the children cooking, eat outside, head off camping — or simply camp in the garden — and make the most of the longer evenings and warmer weather.

The Torbay Airshow also takes place over half-term, from 30 May – 1 June, and should be a brilliant family day out for those heading that way with an opportunity to see the Red Arrows – not to be missed.

Do not forget that Sports Days begin the week after half-term, so there may also be a little running, throwing and jumping practice taking place over the holidays!

Finally, a reminder that the St Peter’s Summer Fete will take place on Saturday, 6 June. We are looking forward to welcoming as many families, grandparents and friends as possible.

Have a wonderful half-term and enjoy some well-earned family time.
